For systems with a 415 VAC supply, the transformer reduces the voltage to a standard 24 VAC control circuit. This lower voltage energises the contactor coil, enabling the main power circuit and motor starter. During pull-in, the coil experiences a brief inrush current before stabilising at a lower sealed current.

Correct transformer sizing is essential. If the transformer is undersized, the control voltage may drop too far when the contactor pulls in, leading to unreliable operation or chatter. If the transformer is incorrectly selected for the application, the contactor may not operate as intended and control components may be subjected to unnecessary stress, leading to potential breakdowns.
